SUMMARY: The Logitech Trackman Wheel Optical is a now discontinued model from Logitech. It was also available as a Cordless (wireless) version, which was recently replaced with the new wireless M570. The Trackman wheel is slightly bigger than the M570 and has a wire, but this is exactly why some people prefer it. Still available on eBay, although ‘new in box’ models can fetch high prices.

I use this mouse exclusively for my desktop and laptop. My previous mouse was the slimmer logitech trackball until my cat ran off with the ball. Ha!
My only complaint with the logitech is that sometimes my furry friends manage to knock the ball out and they absolutely love to hide that sucker. I wish the ball retained a little better.
Aside from that, I love it. I can’t use any other mouse now, im spoiled.
At first, it was a bit weird to use, but I soon got used to it and now I would never go back to a normal mouse. I have used mine since 2008 or 2009, so the left button is a bit worn and sometimes I can’t get it to click properly. I agree with Mark, that the ball is a bit to easy to knock loose – other than that, I am super satisfied with this mouse. What I really appreciate, is that i am not tied a desk top to be able to use the mouse – I may have it on the armrest of my chair, in my lap or in my left hand or where ever is best for the moment. …and it look good too!
Actually this Logitech TrackMan Wheel Optical wired usb has third button – scroll wheel is clickable as 3rd button – middle click. I like it very much. Use it at home and take it to work. I like it very much, very comfortable, wired – do not need batteries – just plug and work always. Do not need any drivers or software- you can hotplug it to any Windows, any Linux and it just works with all 3 buttons and wheel. 3rd wheel button is always mapped by default to middle click. Use it on Fedora Linux, Lunar Linux, Win XP, 98se,Me,7,10.
Disadvantages:
-no tilt wheel – only traditional wheel
-ball is falling off very easily: not a issue when using or cleaning but trouble during transport – always have to look for it in backpack – you can mitigate this issue by putting trackball in small closed plastic bag for transport time.
This was my first trackball mouse, i don’t have it anymore since my dad tossed it out when we got the Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball, i wasn’t very happy but currently i am still using the M570.
Cable and no arm movement. I fell in love with it when it came out ages ago. Got my third one still now, dirty and dented, won’t change to wireless for battery recharging and battery issues.
I’m one of those that will pay a fortune on eBay for a new one.
Cheers,
So I got my first one of these new at Walmart back in 2004/2005. Since then, I’ve acquired about half a dozen of these. They vary in shade and weight, but they’re the same slick usage. I even have the M570, and while the M570 is great for travel, it’s not as ‘slick’ or ‘flickable’ as the original is.
I also have the Elecom that’s similar in design and I would say it is on par with the original wired logitech. I recently got one of the ancestors of this in white and it is slick and nice as well. It actually has a slightly bigger ‘base’ that your hand rests on similar to the Microsoft, oh, I forgot I have the Microsoft as well. It has a damaged ball so I can’t comment on the slickness, but I do like the base better than the Logitech.
If a thumb trackball is what your hand likes, any of these will get your hand to be a lot happier. Then you can get more versions and ‘dial-in’ exactly what the perfect one is. I’ve been lucky enough that I’ve been able to do that with my trackball and keyboard and display over a decade ago, hereby avoiding any rsi that would have occurred with my tremendous amount of time of computer use each day.
